Learn to Fish Niagara River 2025

It’s back again! Learn to Fish is coming to the Niagara River for its 3rd annual Learn to Fish event on Saturday, August 16, 2025. The Niagara River Remedial Action Plan (NRRAP) team has once again partnered with Learn to Fish Ontario to get people of all ages out to the Niagara River where they will have the opportunity to learn the basics of fishing and experience the wildlife and habitat along the banks of the Niagara River!

This year, we are at a new location–Gonder’s Flats in Fort Erie. Gonder’s Flats is a natural area and coastal wetland along the Niagara River in Fort Erie that has been in active restoration since 2014 through the NRRAP project partners. In 2024, Niagara Parks installed two viewing platforms over the Niagara River. These platforms also provide great access for fishing, as fishing is one of the beneficial uses of the Niagara River.

Friendly instructors from the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) will explain how to use fishing equipment, share some basic tips about fish identification, and demonstrate how to fish legally, safely, and sustainably.

The best part? Learn to Fish is a free 2-hour program geared towards people of all ages who are new to fishing, or need a refresher. Each 2-hour session consists of two parts, starting with a guided 1-hour introduction to fishing and skill practice. The second hour is spent fishing the river where you can put your new skills to the test! MRN staff will support you through the entire 2-hours. Rods, reels, bait, and lifejackets will be provided. A fishing licence is not required for this event as a day licence is included with the event.

There will be NRRAP staff available to answer questions you have about the RAP, and Niagara Parks staff who will share about various activities they are supporting along the Niagara River and surrounding areas. We will also have some fun activities and opportunities to learn more about the restoration efforts happening at Gonder’s Flats. Join us for a day of fun!
